CAIRO, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's Cairo Tower, an outstanding landmark in Cairo, was lit up Monday night with the logo of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics to show support for the incoming sports gala.
The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics will take place between Feb. 4 and 20, followed by the Winter Paralympics from March 4 to 13.
During the event dubbed the "Cairo Tower Lighting Show for the Beijing Winter Olympics," the tower was also illuminated with sentences in Chinese, English and Arabic, such as "Beijing 2022" and "see you in Beijing in 10 days."
Speaking ahead of the show organized by the tower's administration, Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liao Liqiang thanked the Egyptian side for the good wishes and careful preparations for the Beijing Winter Olympics, wishing the Beijing Winter Olympics a complete success.
"It is China's goal to present a simple, safe and wonderful Olympic Games to the world," the ambassador said, adding that Chinese people have made all preparations and are waiting for everyone to gather in Beijing.
The Egyptian Olympic Committee (EOC) voiced its strong support for China for hosting the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
"Together for the future, we wish great success for China," the EOC wrote on its official Facebook page, sharing a promotional video of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
Sherif El-Erian, secretary-general of the Egyptian Olympic Committee, affirmed that the Egyptian Olympic Committee fully supports China to host the Winter Olympics.
"We have no doubts that China will succeed in hosting the Winter Olympics, as it succeeded in hosting the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which was an impressive and beautiful Olympics," he added.
He stressed that "China is a big country, and Egyptian-Chinese relations are at the highest level, not only in sports, but also in other fields."
For his part, the Chinese ambassador said "Cairo Tower is putting on a wonderful light show, which further reflects the good wishes of the Egyptian people for the Beijing Winter Olympics. This is of great significance to sports and peace lovers around the world, and the Chinese people cherish it."
With warm weather all year round, Egypt currently has no federation for winter sports. However, the secretary-general told Xinhua that Egyptian sports officials are working on having a winter sports federation and national teams for the Winter Olympics.
The lighting show was attended by a number of Egyptian and foreign visitors who expressed their happiness to witness the show, wishing full success of the Winter Olympics in Beijing.
A couple from Panama, who visit Egypt for the first time, said it is great to see Egypt showing their support to the winter sports event held in China.
"Egypt is a country with a warm climate, but this event shows their passion to actively attend and develop winter sports. Hope Egypt and China both succeed to achieve their goals," the couple told Xinhua.
