Dell Demps will get back to basics, taking years of knowledge as an NBA general manager into a new job as an assistant coach with the Utah Jazz, ESPN reported Friday.

Demps will join the staff of Jazz head coach Quin Snyder after his nine-year tenure as GM of the New Orleans Pelicans came to an end in 2019. Demps worked with the Jazz staff on his own accord this past season before landing the assistant gig.

In total, Demps had a two-decade run as basketball executive, including a three-year run with Snyder when Snyder was a coach in the NBA D League (now G League) with the Austin Toros.

Among his more notable moves as GM with the Pelicans was the selection of forward Anthony Davis with the 2012 first overall draft pick. He also made guard Buddy Hield a first-round selection in 2016 before trading him to the Sacramento Kings a year later in a move that landed DeMarcus Cousins.

Demps went undrafted in 1992 out of Pacific before eventually forging a 20-game NBA career split among the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs and Orlando Magic. He played in five overseas leagues as well.

According to the report, the Jazz also are set to hire Keyon Dooling to a player-development role. Dooling played 13 seasons in the NBA for seven teams, with an average of 7.0 points and 2.2 assists per game. He also played at Missouri when Snyder was head coach of the Tigers.
