Catholic Church threatens legal action against Brazil rape victim

Asia Pacific News.Net
Thursday 5th March, 2009

In Brazil, a nine-year-old girl has been allowed an abotion after being raped.

The girl was expecting twins after being raped by her stepfather, who had been abusing her since she was six.

In Brazil, abortion is only permitted in cases of rape or when pregnancy threatens the life of the mother.

Despite this, the Roman Catholic church has threatened to charge the mother of the girl with murder for agreeing to the medical procedure.

A lawyer for the archdiocese of Olinda and Recife, which lies in the northeast of the country, has said the girl should have brought the twins into the world.
