Tremor forces evacuation of 1,000 in China

Kunming (China), Aug 20 (Xinhua) Authorities evacuated some 1,000 people after a tremor measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale hit a county in southwest China's Yunnan province early Wednesday.
The tremor struck Yingjiang county of Dehong Dai and Jingpo prefecture, with the epicentre at 25.1 degrees north and 97.9 degrees east, according to the province's Earthquake Bureau.
There was no immediate report of casualty following the quake that affected some 8,500 people in 15 townships.
According to a government report, some houses collapsed in the quake.
Roads in the countryside, schools and hospitals were also damaged, the Yingjiang county government said, adding that an emergency response system had been activated.
