Surgery holidays promoted in Britain
Getting away from it all in India and having cardiac surgery at the same time is now being advertised to frustrated patients in England.
The Times of London said the campaign is a collaboration between travel agent Thomas Cook India and the new Medical Tourism Council of Maharashtra to sell Indian hospitals as a cheaper, quality alternative to a long wait in Britain's National Health Service.
Indian doctors estimate heart surgery costs an average of $55,000 in Britain but only $11,000 in Bombay. NHS services are free and the report did not say who would pay for the out-of-country surgery
Patients can choose their doctor and hospital on a Web site and will be met at the airport on arrival in Bombay and taken to the hospital of their choice.
Sushil Jiwarajka, the chairman of the Indian Chambers of Commerce in Bombay and a key backer of the marketing drive, said the goal is to create a package that takes someone from surgery to the beach in a short time.
Basically we will hold their hand all the way through the experience, he said. Afterwards when they are recovering, we have some of the best beaches in the world, beautiful places for meditation holidays.
